Suggest a replacement for Altec Lansing MX5021

Today is a sad day for me. An irrepairable loss. I feel like having lost a dear friend.

My Altec Lansing 5021 has gone silent. I was trying out the Open Free software to play my mkvs and was jolted to find my speakers dead. I had never looked into any other speaker system ever since I bought the 5021. Only a 5021 can replace a 5021 but unfortunately Altec Lansing has discontinued it and the 6021 is not even half good as its predecessor (or so I believe from the reviews).

So what else? I have to do a lot of research to find an equally good one and a THX certified at that. Any suggestions that will shorten my research is most welcome.

Best suggestion, if you have a store close that has speakers setup is to check them out and decide. Everyone hears things differently, and I can attest to that being I have a recording studio. We get into "friendly conversation" over what monitor speakers are best or what headsets are best, etc.

You will probably get responses from people suggesting their favorite, but listening and comparing yourself is the only true way to determine what to buy.

It is a difficult proposition in India. Most vendors deal only with specific products and do not have a full range of a single manufacturer not to speak of systems from other manufacturers. Most will have only a rudimentary set up and if I listen to different speakers in different shops, that audition is not going to help since the environment will be different.Actually to have a meaningful audition, the different speaker systems should be listened to in the actual environs where one will be using it or a controlled environment in the vendors' premises.

That is one reason why I go for THX certified speaker systems where the manufacturers have to comply with a fixed standard to get certified. So Sound quality is more or less assured within limits.

After considering various options - Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX, Logitech Z630 THX, m-audio AV40, Audio Engine A2 -, I decided to have a relook at Bose. The reason: There is a Bose Showroom just a mile away.

And then I came across this fact that Bose has released Companion 20 just about three months back.

I have never considered a Bose before since they do not mention any raw specifications, it is over-priced and lower in audio quality than many low-priced systems.

The review that changed my mind is Bose Companion 20 Peripheral review - Trusted Reviews . I also went through all 40 User Reviews at Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Bose-Companion.../dp/B0053T4PHC

The main consideration that clinched the issue was the easy availability and access to warranty and out-of-warranty service.

So I walked the mile yesterday evening, had a cursory audition and carried the baby home. Pity that the Bose Outlet couldn't even give a carry-bag. I ended up carrying the raw package all the way back home.

My first impressions: However good it may be, it cannot match the Altec Lansing MX-5021. I will miss it.

So then it is the Bose Companion 20 - the winner and successor.

For us budget minded, there's a good alternative if you don't have to fill a theatre with sound. I've got two sets of these--One on the PC and one on the bedroom TV. For the price, they BOOM! Can't run them at max because they'll rattle the house. Maybe not a Lansing MX but darn close to it.

The only 2.1 system that I have heard that can compare to the MX5021s is

    Swan M50w.

I own both and the swans are more accurate with better amp and woofer.

Klipshe, creative, altec, Logitec all are JUNK.

MX5021 the best they ever made.

The swan does not blow it out of the water in terms of midrange but they are better in almost all areas. Build quality, amp, sub.
