Why does WMP takes so much CPU/RAM?

    title says everything...

why does the Windows Media Player takes so much RAM and CPU even when i don't use visualization?
while surfing the net or playing game and WMP is on it gets very laggy..

now I'm using AVS Media Player and it takes 50% less CPU/RAM then WMP but unfortunately it doesn't have the "SRS WOW effect" like in WMP

It might be caused by the SRS WOW Effect... ;-)

Seriously though, it might really be additional sound rendering effects. Try running without them and compare. Additionally, WMP might still be building its library database. Check the bottom of its window for the status bar. Does it say anything there?

i don't see any status bar at the bottom, and with the "SRS WOW effects" disabled it takes less CPU but no change in the RAM consumption

    AVS Media Player:
    Peak Working Set (Memory) - 48,648 K
    CPU - 5% highest

    Windows Media Player:
    Peak Working Set (Memory) - 188,800 K
    CPU - 78% highest

Wow, that really is a lot. Mine rarely exceeds 40MB when not playing videos. Which version are you using?

Windows Media Player 12,I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32bit

bad thing about AVS Media Player is that it stops playing the music once i switch to full screen of a game..

Sorry that it took me so long to reply.

My best suggestion, and I know it's not actually good:

In "Programs and Features", disable the Media Player, reboot your computer and re-enable it. If that does not fix it, I have no idea anymore what could fix it.

Why are you concerned with RAM usage? You have a lot of it to go around! Use it.

Any of the WMP enhancements are resource hogs. If you run it in vanilla mode, it will be OK.
