This basic question comes up on here (and other forums) occasionally. You can only have one "default" playback device, either the HDMI or the "Speakers" (your PC sound card). I've never seen anything posted about a way to get around that.

The answer to this question is yes, but only from applications which provide control themselves, as stated above, windows itself does not provide this by default.

Some applications such as PowerDVD, ( a commercial application), allows you to direct it's output to HDMI, whilst leaving all other audio to the on-board audio system.

You may have some success by searching for an application which will play the NetTV that has this function. I do not know of anything specific, but it is possible to do

As stated in my first post it is not possible to choose the audio render on an ad-hoc, application basis.

It is possible technically to send the audio from an application to a specific renderer, but the application has to be written specifically to achieve this.

For example to make KMPlayer work in this way, either KMPlayer or Windows Itself would need to be re-written

I do not know of many applications that have this facility, and as far as I know none are in the free sector, though there may well be many more applications to do this available, not sure if it's possible with the new release of VLC.

It's just a case of checking out as many applications as you can until you find something to meet your needs. It may be that there is something available to meet your precise needs, but this may not be the case

for every app... that would be nice, but KMplayer would work for you since it has dual renderer options. Just leave your pc speakers at default and for the KMplayer set the HDMI output, and your wifey will get her sound....

I on the other hand... (don't mean to steal your thread or something :))... Want to find a way to sync those two renderers (first being realtek HD, second ATI HDMI).
I have four old pc speakers and two HDTV speakers I've tried to set it to be 6 speaker system and KMPLayer does play same source audio thru two diferent renderers, but there is an half a sec diff, what sounds like an echo....
If you know how to fix that that would be nice....

    either way... hey good luck.
