updated realtek driver thru vaio update and now i have no sound

hi, i downloaded thru the vaio update the latest realtek driver version 6.0.1.6526. Now i have no sound whatsoever and neither sony or realtek have replied to my emails. the speaker icon in the bottom rh corner has am=n x in it like its muted but when i hover over it it says no audio output device is installed. i have been to the sony support site and tried re-updating version 6.0.1.6526 but it still has no sound... help! running win 7 home prem 64bit on a sony vaio c series vpccb15fg.
I have uninsalled and reinstalled driver to no avail

Did you try a "rollback" to the previous version (that apparently worked)? Go to the Device Manager, display the sound and in the Driver section you can "rollback" the driver to the previously installed version. Or if that does not work, use the System Restore and restore the PC back to a date when the old driver was installed and it worked.

Does the Sony site list an earlier version sound driver?

When you uninstall/reinstall you need to uninstall, restart the PC and then reinstall. If you just uninstall/reinstall without restarting the original problem can still be there.

One more thing to try, go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the device and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Also check the box to uninstall the drivers then restart the PC and Windows will detect and reinstall the sound (and may use a Sony driver or it may use some other driver). If the sound works, you are back in business.

What is the status in the Device Manager? Does it have an error code or is it "working OK"?

Check your settings to make sure your rear jack (where the speaker jack is in) is selected as the live jack.

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally Sound panel. In the playback section do you have "Speakers" showing? Is it enabled and shown as default playback device? or is it disabled? If its disabled, enable it and see if that changes things.
