Asus X72VR sound card problems, cooling the chip?

    Hello everyone!

A few years back my audio jacks started acting weird (one of them being ignored completely) and I've been looking for a solution ever since.

A few days back I disassembled the whole thing and it seems like the jacks itself are still well soldered to the board: it is not caused by the jack itself. Because of this I suspect the Realtek HD sound-chip, often described on fora as a cheap piece of junk.

I must admit I did not look at the chip yet, since I was only looking at the jacks when I disassembled the laptop.

Replacing the chip will be a scary job, since in this case the soldering should be redone. Replacing the mobo crossed my mind, but I guess the stopped selling these and if the still do somewhere it probably wont go cheap.

Anyhow, this guy: No Sound From Headphone Jack With Realtek Hd Audio Device - Single Post said putting the laptop in the freezer will solve a similar problem.

Even if this will help I am worried about the safety of such an action. Of course I could only freeze the mobo and keep everything else out, but I googled around and found people saying the change of temperature might cause chips to break and that the condense could cause short circuit.

So I wondered what do you guys consider the best solution?

BTW I if was possible to only cool the audiochip in stead of the whole mobo :S

RealTek audio is used in many PC's (and on many motherboards). It is as good as any other audio chip. Replacing the chip, if that is really what is needed is not a job for an amateur, you need specialized desoldering and soldering equipment to work on multi-layer circuit boards and Surface Mount Technology (SMT) components. You would need the exact same RealTek chip, as there are many variations of the chip and just using any model chip other than the original will not work.

The best option, if the internal sound is defective is to use a USB connected sound "card".
