According to the MSI site specs for your motherboard, the internal (on the motherboard) S/PDIF connection is "optional" - whatever "optional" means, its not stated on the MSI site.

Before you start tearing moving boxes apart looking for the S/PDIF cable, check the motherboard to see if you have the "optional" S/PDIF connection. If you don't there is no need to go any further and the only way you are going to get HDMI audio is to upgrade the video card.

Ahh...egg on my face here, but I upgraded and I guess I forgot to change my system specs here (sorry)

Current card is a Newegg.com - MSI 870A-G54 (FX) AM3+ AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard and it said "1 x Optical" under that option so I would say I do have one. Now I just need to go from there.

No it is mine. my old motherboard died at the binging of this year and I replaced it. I thought I went to seven forums and changed it, but I guess I forgot and been so long I just left it as thinking it was a done deal.
