Windows will not recognise microphone input from external sound device

    Hi,

I'm running Windows 7 Home N SP1 x64. I'm using an M-Audio Fast-Track Pro device to record audio into a music sequencer (Cubase 5), through a Shure SM58 Microphone. The M-Audio box is connected to the computer via USB. I've been using this set-up for about a year now and it hadn't caused me any problems until the last few weeks. For some reason Windows is not registering any signal from the input of the M-Audio box. The box itself picks up the sound and I can hear tapping on the microphone when M-Audio is selected as the output device, but not from the built-in speakers.

I first noticed the problem in the software (and thought for the longest time that it was the software). I'm very competent with Cubase and tried everything I could think of to get it to register with no avail. It was only when I tried to use the device on another sequencer that I realised that it's not the software. Then, since the mic works fine, the box itself is picking up the signal and out-putting it through itself, it must be something wrong with the computer or the OS.

I've re-installed the M-Audio driver, didn't make any difference. I've set the M-Audio as default in both playback and recording tabs in the sound control panel. Playback works fine. One thing that's really strange is that when I open manage sound drivers in the control panel and tap on the mic, neither the levels in recording nor playback even flutter, even though I can hear it pretty clearly through the headphones.

I'm out of ideas, any help would be appreciated! Cheers!

I have a home recording studio using Sonar X2 (my production DAW software) and a Roland Octa-Capture recording interface unit. I also have an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R that I can use with Sonar (and Pro Tools MP9) although the Octa-Capture is my primary recording unit.

If I understand the problem, your recording program (Cubase) and Windows is not getting (showing) any audio input. But, you can hear it on the headphones, which I assume is the headphone jack on the Fastrack device. If this is the case, what you are hearing is the input to the Fastrack and not the output. This suggests there is a problem in the Fast Track unit.

Do you have another PC, or access to a friend's PC, that you can install the FastTrack device on for testing. If it works on another PC then there is some type of configuration or software issue with your PC. However, if it does the same thing on a different PC then there is problem with the FasTrack device.

Yeah, I'm going to try that. Also going to borrow a friend's device while I'm at it and see if that works. Won't be able to do it for a couple of days though, I'll post the results.

OK. I'll leave this in my "watch list" until you post back.

    Okay, un-expected results.

I first installed the m-audio onto my laptop which is also running windows 7; I never use it for recording 'cause the latency is awful. But it worked on that computer and I was able to record audio, so I was thinking that there must be something wrong with my desk-top's recording input (as I described above). THEN I borrowed a friend's AKAI EIE Pro sound device, installed that on the desktop and...it also works. I have no idea why the computer would accept an input from one device and not another. There's no immediate rush for the solution now because I can use my friend's device to do some work, but I'd like to go back to my own gear at some point. What do you think?

I know there's not much for you to go on, I'm thinking that it must be a glitch of some kind?

Try a complete uninstall/reinstall of the Maudio.

Connect the Maudio unit to the PC then go to the Device Manager and RIGHT click on the entry for the MAudio. Then LEFT click "Uninstall". Also check the box to uninstall the drivers. Physically disconnect the MAudio from the PC then restart the PC (Important do not skip the restart). After Windows finishes starting, do a complete reinstall of the MAudio unit, install the drivers and when it tells you (or after drivers are installed) physically connect the unit and Windows will detect and install it.

I still have this on my watch list. Has there been any final resolution?

Hi, sorry for the delay, when I got the new hardware, fixing the m-audio became a low priority as I had work to do. Just tried what you said there: no change. It's very confusing, 'cause I know the m-audio works on other computers as it worked on my laptop (which I don't use for recording because the latency is diabolical). Then the EIE box works on this computer so I really have no idea anymore.

You could try the Maudio forum or the www.gearslutz.com forum and maybe someone there has a suggestion.
