I did another test, once the sound cut out I unplugged the green audio jack and plunged in a headset and it worked there was sound, I plugged the speakers back in and nothing. So when the sound disappeared on speakers it worked fine using headset.

Does this means that my speakers are dying? (Any other tests I can do to make sure)
    Thanks
To test your speakers you could plug the speakers into your phone or mp3

    Hey Guys, newbie here

Just tripped over a fix for the same problem with my onboard soundcard. I had a stereo 3.5mm cable plugged into my line in jack on the soundcard. Stuffed around for ever with settings but once I unplugged it, problem went away... no more sound drop out.

    Yo guys hope this works!!!

Hey guys I had same issue EXACTLY and I registered to this forum to hopefully help you out as I share your pain!

basically what I did to stop all this was go onto my playback devices, properties of the "speakers" and disable all sound effects, THEN what I think is the most important thing I did was to make sure "Speakers" were not set to the default playback device, whatever else is alongside it... I personally have "realtek digital output"

I whacked on a movie in VLC clicked audio at the top and audio device, chose "speakers" and voila now at 10pm I can finally relax and watch my movie .... or fall asleep!
