I bought a new Philips SHP 2000. Decent headphone but no option to control the volume. Anyway, while watching movies I can use VLC or MPCStar to increase the volume beyond 100%. But for mp3, I usually go for WMP and the sound, obviously, is too low. Same way, while gaming the sound is too low even if I put it at 100% in game settings. The speaker icon in taskbar shows 100%.
Now, is there anyway to increase the sound?

Have you tried enabling Loudness Equalization?
If you have the Equalizer option, you can enable that and set all the sliders to Max.
Actually Philips believes in decent sound .... they provide sweet and moderate sounds. There are some China made alternatives those generate sound like a loudspeaker, any of those may be tried in case.
Or, 9.1 surround may be another alternative for adequate sound.
If it is Philips, they know the best about sound output most probably, I personally trust them totally.
Unfortunately I also dont know how to increase the system sound beyond 100%.

I've never used or needed to use a device like this, so I don't have any real world experience.

I'm probably talking a load of old sh** here, but have you got the latest Realtek audio driver, as you are obviously using the built in audio of your motherboard.
You should be able to access the Realtek driver program which may give you extra options to increase the sound.
I had a similar problem with the inbuilt sound on my MSI card (ie good sound, but no real volume).
Put in a separate sound card and bingo, blasted my eardrums out!
