Realtek AC97 is very old audio. What is the model of your PC or motherboard? Did you install a Vista/Windows 7 sound driver?

The HP/Compaq downloads for this model only show a sound driver for Win 2000/98/XP. These drivers are not compatible with Win 7. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...tem=hd-17950-2

If you are using a non-Vendor driver you are at the mercy of how it works. Newer sound systems, such as RealTek, have a control panel that allows customization such as whether the speakers are turned off when a headset is connected. The generic Windows installed HD Audio Codec (if Windows will even install in this old audio chip) is probably the best that you can do.

If you have installed a sound driver, uninstall it and let Windows install the generic, basic function, HD Audio Codec (if it can) and then see how it works.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the AC97 sound to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Also Check to the box to also uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts Windows should detect the sound and install a driver. No guarantee this will work, but its worth a try.
