Laptop to TV Audio not working-Using Y adapter

Hey, So I want to be able to watch videos and stuff by streaming them from my laptop to my tv. I bought a VGA cable and I have the video working. For the audio I bought a Y-Adapter, and that is not working. I hooked the single end into the headphone jack on my computer, and I hooked the white and red ends into the white and red ports on the back of my tv, but still I'm getting no sound. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to change the settings on my PC to make it work?

    Thanks

I am running: Windows 7 Home Premium
    Acer
    Aspire V3-571

You will prob find the audio inputs on your telly also have a yellow video plug and will be assigned something like AV-2 or AV-3 but you have selected the vga port to display so it wont look at av input to output audio

Does your laptop have an HDMI port? After checking your specs for it, it does. Why not use an HDMI cable...$20 and it's designed to that, carry video and sound.

My TV isn't the greatest, it's LCD but it doesn't have an HDMI port, only a VGA port.

Not sure depends what outputs you have on pc and inputs on tv, generally hdmi is the easiest as bassfisher pointed out
If you have an input on your tv that takes audio and video you may be able to get a converter/adapter lead to get it to work ??
