hdmi playback sound card or onboard?

If i was to buy a sound card, and i connect hdmi to graphics card and use tv to watch a blu ray, what sound would be used? Im assuming onboard is that right?

None of the above. The sound would come from the video card when using HDMI.

Make sure you get a video card that has on-board HDMI audio. Some do not and some rely on having an S/PDIF port on the PC's motherboard for the HDMI sound. The ones with the HDMI audio on the video card is preferred.

Most (all that I've seen) of the newer video cards with HDMI have it built in, but still verify before you purchase one.
