What are you using for sound now? Good onboard sound (Realtek) has some of the features of a discrete sound card.

I recently got a Sound Blaster Z card. I believe that it has the features that you're asking about. I haven't exercised them yet, because I live alone in a "single family" house. There's no need for me to limit the volume at night. I mostly watch movies on an LCD TV, anyway.

The Z may be a bit expensive for your needs. Amazon UK has it for around £80.

Personally I put the Asus Xonar DG in my machines mate not expensive and you have a really nice GUI to play around with the sounds.

Plus you can use 2:1 up to 7:1 systems with it move the speakers around etc etc :)

    ASUS - Xonar DG

ASUS DG to begin with DX for bet bang for buck in the entire world. For the feature you want i'm sure there must be some softwares which can do that. My DX can control bass but not automatic volume control.

Absolutely Rockfella I think that one is brilliant but for what I wanted and at the price the DG is just fine.

I can control all frequencies and the effects that I want but what I don't get is why would you want automatic volume control?? I have that in my Mazda's Bose system and can see the point but in a computer I am a bit perplexed.
