New windows 7 prem. 32 bit on new HD. No sound from onboard device.

I have a dual boot system with XP home on another hard drive and I am able to get sound from that operating system. It is VIA vt1708b chipset on an Asus m3a78 model motherboard. XP has no problem playing sound as stated but when I switch to windows 7 I get nothing. I have tried the drivers from asus's web site as well as some from VIA's site with no luck. I know the motherboard is a littlt old but its not that old yet. I am not getting any errors in device manager and there seems to be no errors anywhere with regards to the sound device. Again, XP plays sound but windows 7 will not. This is a fresh install of windows 7 on a new hard drive and I am running out of ideas as to why windows 7 does no want to play sound.

Any ideas would be appreciated and if any other information is wanted please let me know.

Thanks for reading and any input anyone may have.

    Good day

When you click the volume button and open "Mixer" what device is selected as default? "Speakers" "HDMI" or "S/PDIF"?

Thanks for the reply. I have made a little progress with this. I should have stated that I was using optical out set up with the XP and windows 7, sorry. Speakers seem to be the ones that are default but there seems to be a couple of setting areas with sound and it is a bit confusing, never the less, I hooked up my three direct wires on back of computer and the back of the Z-5500 control panel. I played with this set up an now I am able to get sound.

The main issue seems to be the optical out set up and I think I changed all the settings more then once with that set up to no avail.

Still strange to me that XP works with no issues but windows 7 is having a fit with optical.

Well I am going to test out some other things and see what happens, so again, thanks for reading.

Great forum here by the way.

    Good day.
