Viewsonic vx2235wm-1 Monitor has no sound.

Just upgraded to Win7 64bit. My trusty old monitor has no sound (the picture is fine) I found a driver for a generic Viewsonic x64 driver, http://www.viewsonic.com/support/dow...d_Win7_x64.zip but that didn't solve the problem. I read a suggestion somewhere to uninstall the driver and let Windows find it. That didn't solve the problem either. I tested the monitor with my old (XP) system, in case the monitor developed a sudden fault, but there is still sound when I plug it back in there.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really don't fancy having to buy a new monitor too, after having had to replace my printer and scanner

What does the monitor require? Older monitors, that use VGA or DVI usually have a Jack to connect from the PC's Speaker out (GREEN) to the monitor for sound. No driver is required for that. There is no audio in a VGA or DVI connection, just video.

There is a green audio cable, connected to the new box, but no sound. I, and several of my friends, tried everything we can to no avail. If I plug the same audio cable back into my old XP machine, sound returns. That is what made me think that it must have to do with the driver
In control panel most options are greyed out

The first thing that I see is you have the Digital set as the default playback device. You will not get any speaker sound with that. Set the Speakers as the default playback device.

Skype may also be causing some type of conflict.

yup play a music video on the background and play around with the 'set as default' and 'set as communication device'. , if problem is still there after you've tried this let us know there are few more fixes. but dont want to mess up your settings just
    yet :)

ALMOST forgot, after you are done making this changes restart your computer, shutting it down and then on manually does not count so restart it. thennnn come and tell us.

I have now disconnected Skype, but it made no difference. Forgot to mention that I can't seem to change the default, it is greyed out. That is the problem. BTW, I triple checked the audio cable and it is connected securely on both ends. And, if I unplug it from this machine and plug in back into my old XP, it (without touching the monitor end) it is working fine.
OK, I now feel REALLY embarrassed! I went to take a photo of the back of the box to send to you to prove that I have it plugged into the correct place. I then unplugged it to take a photo of all the possibilities. I noticed another place that could have been green, so tried that one. A window opened with some settings. Fiddled with that, did nothing. Closed the window, and plugged it back to where I had it originally. The same window opened and voila, I had sound! And, it has now allowed me to change the default in the control panel
TBH, I really don't understand it, I had unplugged it countless times as had some friends of mine and that window never came up before. Unless it was that I unplugged the Skype headset?
The sound is really echoey, (is that a word?) but I'm sure I'll figure that out after some fiddling

Check the RealTek HD Audio Manager panel in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound. Most of the RealTek's have "Sound Effects" and that could be where the echo is coming from. Disable all sound effects.
