Headphone jack not registering headphones when pluged in

I recently broke the headphone socket in my laptop (Dell 17R-7720), the jack still works if headphones are plugged in they will play but they are not detected and sound continues to play out the speakers as well.

If I disable the speakers in playback devices then the jack will stop working, I am sure there must be a simple solution to disable the speakers and keep the jack playing but it is one I cannot seem to find...

    Thanks for the help

The problem is that there is an additional contact in the headphone jack, for sensing and "telling" the sound chip to mute the speakers. Since the jack is "broke" the sensing is no longer there.

On many Dell laptops, the headphone jack is on a sub-assembly. If that is the case with this one, that sub-assembly will have to be replaced.

This is what I presumed.. Unfortunately the jack is in the main board but it does look fairly easy to replace, I just can't find anyone selling the right part. As a short term work around I have ordered a 1.99 usb sound card. Really I was just wondering if there were any tweaks/software that could force it to use the headphones..

Thanks for the quick reply :)

There is no software, that I know of, to do what you want.

    Hi trism11,

If you disable the speakers headphones would also stop working due to the sense pin in headphones. For this issue motherboard requires replacement.

If the system is under warranty then please contact me through a private message and provide your service tag and contact information so I may access your system records.

And, if the system is out of warranty then you contact our Expired Warranty Support at the link below:

I am unable to find any software that can disable the speakers for you. As sense pin is designed in a way that when you connect the headphone it makes it as default audio output source. When it is broken it gives sound playback on all available devices.

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.
