No sound - Windows 7 Home Premium

    Hi all.

I upgraded to windows 7 home premium, from windows xp. I needed a clean install from xp, as many of you will know.

So I installed windows 7, 64 bit. everything worked fine, except for the 'Digital Audio (HDMI) sound'. Windows update did provide an update, but that didn't fix the sound. Every single driver I have downloaded and installed hasn't fixed the problem.

When I do uninstall the high definition audio device via the device manager so I can install a new one, it does uninstall. But when I restart the computer, that high definition audio device installs again, and the driver I was trying to install didn't seem to work.

The playback device on the Digital audio menu is shown below:

I am really stuck at what to do, any help to fix this sound problem will be appreciated.

    My computer specs:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 Processor
    Motherboard: ASUS P5KPL/1600(With CD)

    Hard drive: 500GB SATA (7200RPM)
    Memory: 4GB DDR2 (Branded)
    Graphics card: 512MB 9600 GSO
DVD drive: 22x Samsung Dual layer DVD-RW (Light scribe)
Multi card reader: Combined with USB
Monitor: Hanns G 22”TFT LCD with built in speaker

Thanks for the quick reply, Ken.

I have no sound at all. I can see the green bar moving to indicate there is sound.

I am using a chip built into my motherboard.

I started using 64 bit, but that didn't work. I re-installed windows 7 yesterday with 32 bits, just to see if that might be the reason, but I still have no sound. I am using 32 bit at the moment.

    An update.

I have been searching all morning, and have finally found a driver that works.

The name has changed to 'VIA High definition audio'. I think it was an update, and the sound works fine now.

One thing i was wondering. A friend of mine said this driver may not be compatible with 64 bit, and i want to go back to 64 bit. Can anybody tell me if it is compatible or not?

This is what the sound looks like now:

drivers are version specific. 32bit wont work on 64. did they have a 64bit where you got this one? If not win 7 what about vista 64bit from there?

Btw Im glad you are working

They did not provide a website for 64 bit, i'm afraid. I tried the 32 bit one just incase, but as you said, it's incompatible.

After a long afternoon of downloading more drivers in 64 bit, i got it to work!

The ASUS website has a load of downloads... it's still VIA high definition...but it's different.

    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

Incase anyone else has the same problem, the file is:

    VIA_Audio_V6017200_XPVistaWin7
    or
    VIA Audio Driver V6.0.1.7200

Thanks a lot for the help Ken, I wouldn't have known how to get the sound to work in 64 bit without you!
