Can I use microphone port on MB to feed output to amplifier?

A very strange question. This is on my home theater setup. I have a smart TV. I want all my TV audio run through external speakers. The TV audio output is fixed level. It does not vary volume with the remote.

Normally you would hook this up to an amplifier. What I want to do is send the fixed level TV audio out signal to my HTPC mic or line in and then out to my computer speakers. If possible it should allow me to vary the volume through my media center remote control.

Can this be done and work correctly? If so, how?

SOME PC audio systems allow reassigning jacks to different uses. If yours has this option then you can change the Mic Input jack to an output.

The Line In is the best source, and it is a stereo input.

Make sure your Default Sound Panel/Recording option is set to "Stereo Mix" (System Mixer). Then whatever is input will be heard on the speakers.
