Both my Windows 7 desktop and Windows 8.1 PC have IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. In the PC I installed an Audigy Sound Blaster FX PCI-e card, but it follows the same pattern as the IDT: there's a slider for line input, but you hear nothing unless you check "Listen to This Device" and hear the post-processor sound.

I also tried using the mic with Skype and Skype sees the microphone/line input, but doesn't hear it, either. So unless I stumble across an astonishing fix I'm going to bite the bullet and spend $150 for a USB interface to do what anything back to Windows 95 would do out of the box.

I've thought I should contact Microsoft or Hewlett-Packard support, but others have already contacted Microsoft to no avail, and is HP going to tell me how to edit my registry? I kinda doubt it.

I'd never heard of IDT - didn't realize you were referring to the onboard sound. My bad. I don't think this is a Microsoft, HP or registry thing. I guess it's a motherboard/chipset issue. My mobo's come with a Realtek chip that with the Realtek driver has the facilities in my screenshots and video. Seems IDT is different.

I build my own pc's and I normally just choose a mobo that supports the latest i7, RAM etc. I had never given much thought to the sound side of things (I just listen to TV, iPlayer, YouTube, movies etc) until I got a headset/mic to do some tutorials. It was then I encountered delay. A bit of googling found the solution in my video posted earlier. Looks like I was lucky in that I had bought hardware with Realtek chips.

Jed, at the limit of his knowledge . . . .

I got the Focusrite 2i2, so for $153 in addition to the $530 I paid for the computer I can almost do what I used to do on XP! And the headphone output on the Focusrite is puny; my voice is louder than the headphones, and I'm a softspoken guy.

I've really got a good mind to just clean my info off this HP computer and take it back to the store. Total garbage.
