    Distorted sound

I use the E-MU soundcard and sound system. I recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and now my sound card sometimes works OK and sometimes gives very badly distorted sound. If I go to Control Panel > Systems and Security > Troubleshoot Common Computer Problems > Run programs made for previous versions of Windows, it fixes the problem. But as soon as I open Cubase or open Premiere Pro the sound goes distorted again. I tried updating the driver and that cured it, but again opening Cubase makes it bad again. What is going on?

May be time for an upgrade of the recording interface unit. I see posts of problems with old XP hardware on the recording forums I visit. Vista/Win7/Win8 handle some audio functions differently than XP and some functions that were available on XP are no longer there.

I have a recording studio with Sonar X3 and a USB connected Roland Octa-Capture for recording interface.
