I want to permanently turn off System Sounds

    Windows 7 Home Premium.

In Control Panel: Hardware and Sound: Sound: Change System Sounds, I've set the Sound Scheme three times now to No Sounds (done this about once a week), clicked Apply/OK, and it keeps reverting to Windows Default. Also tried saving/naming the scheme -- didn't help.

For example, when I go into Personalization and click to view one of the themes, I still get the ding-dong bell-tone. How do permanently turn off system sounds?

    Thanks.

I haven't noticed this behaviour until now, I think I will apply this fix as well, thanks :)

How to Allow or Prevent Changing Sounds in Windows 7 and Windows 8

    Cheers!

I tried it with mine. I have System Sounds off as I use the PC for my recording studio.

I noticed if I change themes, the Sounds automatically turn on and they have to be disabled again.

Yes, I think you're right, and I think the problem I was seeing was that every time I simply clicked on a theme to just take a look at what it was about (and perhaps other settings you just open and look at), Big-Brother Windows reset the sounds back to ON.

    Thanks.

you can always if your sure you will never use them again delete them. "C:\Windows\Media" should reside in there I would backup your system before hand though. I'm sure if you change themes it changes to that themes sound scheme, you could also mute windows sounds too in the sound mixer not sure it that changes with themes.

Solved. You can quickly and easily turn off ALL windows system sounds. Or just a particular sound theme, even particular sound files.

Here is how to turn off *all* of them safely and surely, and use the same method if you want to only do individual sounds or schemes. Go to your Windows>Media folder (where all system sounds and themes are contained as .wav files and "Theme" folders.

Rename that "Media" folder using the standard disable (but not delete) method of remarking: that is, adding "rem" prefix to the file or folder name. Windows will not be able to find and activate anything in that folder. That way later on, should you wish to return a file or folder to normal usability, you just know that you should delete the rem prefix. So, in short, right click on that folder and rename it to remMedia. Rename it back to Media if you want all the sounds again.

    Voila.

If you ever have to run SFC/scannow...
...Voila - the folder will be recreated :-(

The renamed Media folder will still be there and a new Media folder will be created :-(

Just FYI. I have no solution.

Thank you for the correction. I've been fortunate myself I guess in that on my eighth desktop now, I don't recall ever having to run the SFC command, in spite of many other Windows issues over the years. But perhaps file corruption is common for other folks, and if so, at worst, they would just have to remark the folder/theme/files once again, after the new folder's recreation. Thanks.

Do the steps in the link (tutorial) in post #2 not work for you?

Those should hold thru a theme change.
