No sound through HDMI or motherboard

Suddenly I have no sound even though I didn't change anything. Usually I plug my speakers into my monitor since the monitor is connected to my NVIDIA 670 via hdmi and it works fine. Right now it doesn't work and neither does plugging the speakers directly into the audio jack on my pc.

The sound icon in the icon tray on my taskbar indicates sound levels when I play a song but I cannot hear them. When I plug speakers into my mobo the Realtek audio manager pops up. When I go into speaker configuration and hit the test button, I hear sounds. And yet I can't hear anything from any other program on my computer.

What is set as the Default Playback Device? Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel Playback section. The HDMI should be set as the default playback device, with an HDMI connection. If you want the PC sound, you will have to set the "Speakers" as the default playback device.
