    Hello, I would like to ask you guys for help. I have ALC898 Audio Codec (my motherboard is: ASRock Z77 Extreme6). Which driver shall I use? Should I stick with R2.82 from 2017 or install the latest one from the very first post: 6.0.9175.1? I use Windows 7 x64 Professional.
    The problem with R2.82 is that its Control Panel doesn't work (doesn't show up when launched - it was a quite known problem at the time). If i remember correctly the issue does not apply to the previous version - R2.81. However, these drivers are 5 years old so I have been seriously wondering about updating the audio driver. Is there any point in it in my case?

    indeed the R2.82 (6.0.1.8186) version is buggy and the realtek audio manager control panel never runs for most configs; the problem does not occur with versions before and after R2.82. Realtek doesn't seem to be providing any more new general release R2.8x drivers on their web site anymore so avoid going there from now on.

    latest HDA driver to use is 6.0.9239.1, absolutelyrando (Brink does not mention it since Realtek submitted a generic FF01 HDA release of 9239 to MS, not 9239 FF00). forget about 6.0.9175.1 and install the 6.0.9239.1 version instead

    links to generic 6.0.9239.1 HDA FF00 drivers:

    ASRock

    EVGA (download 1) (download 2) {released for newly released evga z790 motherboards on 12/13/2022}

    Microstar International [MSI] {released for MSI MS-98N9 ATX industrial motherboard on 12/22/2022}

    Thank you erpster4 for your advice. Are you aware if there is a generic 6.0.9239.1 driver which would be the equivalent/counter-part of the Realtek driver that used to be hosted on the Realtek website? I have never been using the ASRock Realtek audio driver. I have always been sticking with the Realtek driver hosted on their website (which seems to be the least problematic from them all).

    not sure what you truly mean, absolutelyrando

    Realtek does not seem to be posting any more new drivers on their web site since July 2017. the chances of them doing so lately are close to 0%

    although there are generic 6.0.9239.1 drivers from MS Update (a 150Mb 64bit version I mentioned in July 2022 and a 90Mb 32bit version mentioned in early August 2022), those are FF01 versions and not the FF00 versions

    FF01 is almost the same as FF00 except the FF01 has the additional Fortemedia APO (fmapo) integration files

    I've been using the 6.0.9239.1 FF01 driver on my bro's old 2010 Win7 64bit based Sony laptop PC (has Realtek ALC269) and have not encountered any problems at all
    same when I installed the 32bit 6.0.9239.1 version (FF00 kind, not the FF01) on a friend's old HP pavilion a1600n desktop computer (the HP computer has Realtek ALC888) but running 32bit Win7 - no problems; sound quality is pretty good

    edit - also, I do NOT use the Realtek audio drivers offered from their web site anymore because of these security vulnerabilities in their old versions (see here and here). one of the security flaws in their drivers was fixed with at least version 6.0.8858.1 and the newer one fixed with at least the 6.0.9151.1 version.

    What I meant was which driver is the most generic. In other words, which driver is as generic as the Realtek driver they host on their website (the outdated 2017 driver). I know there are numerous integrations meant for different chipsets but I don't know which integration the 2017 driver contains.

    sorry for responding months late to this

    it does NOT matter to me which driver version is the most generic, absolutelyrando (and it's totally ridiculous to be asking such a question, almost insulting my intelligence)
    Try any of the HDA driver versions from 6.0.9151.1 to 6.0.9239.1 (or any older version before 6.0.9151.1) and find out for yourself which one works best for your ASRock board.
    I don't have time in the world to figure this out. plus your board does not use any "special" integrations (aka. Dolby, DTS, etc.) for audio, according to the "tech specs" of your board.

    or ask sandyt in ten forums on what HDA driver version you should use on your ASRock board

    the outdated July 2017 Realtek HDA driver packs "multiple" integration DLL files and do not use "FFxx" designations - so you do not need to know what different kinds of integrations are there because most of them will not be used for your board
