My audio driver seems to have developed a mind of its own. My motherboard is a Gigabyte H55M-USB3. There are two drivers, High Definition Audio Device (ver.6.1.7601.17514) and Realtek High Definition Audio (ver. 6.0.1.6066, file 1.0.64.10). Chipset is an Intel i3 530 and I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate.

When I get into Control Panel/Sound, sometimes the default playback device is EP-HDMI-RX. Other times, it's my receiver, an Onkyo TX-SR605. The EP-HDMI-RX is something new; I've never seen it until about two or so weeks ago. And I can see one or the other; they're never there both at the same time. When it's the Onkyo, all works fine. I can switch to a variety of listening modes and I can take advantage of what the receiver offers.

However, when it's the EP-HDMI-RX, I don't get sound properly, which is what I have right now. If I right-click on the icon in Control Panel/Sound, I get sound from each of the 5 speakers I have. During the test, the receiver's screen says "Multich." However, once the test is done, the receiver's screeen reads "No Signal." When I switch to XBMC, then the receiver seems to default to Multich and I do get sound. However, if I swtich the listening mode on the receiver, I get only one other choice, which is Direct, and none of the other ten or so modes the receiver has.

I deleted the drivers (both of them) and had Windows find and re-install the High Definition Audio Device and then I got the latest audio driver from Gigabyte's site and installed it. It worked for a day but then, tonight, I turned it back on and I'm at square one.

So how do I get the driver to work properly, as in how do I get rid of the EP-HDMI-RX? Or is this not a driver problem and it's something totally different? I've Googled EP-HDMI-RX and I don't get any useful info.

I think I figured it out. It has something to do with the Monoprice HDMI switch I have and the order in which things are turned on. I think the switch has to be on before the computer comes on. If it isn't, that's when I get the EP-HDMI-RX icon. If I start the computer with the switch already on, all seems to be fine. I'll experiment with it some more and will be back if such isn't the case.

Has anyone installed these updates on an alienware x51, I'm a bit paranoid, as the updates usually "break" something...

I could really recommend ASUS's v6.0.1.7004. It seems to sound really, really well, at least on my ALC269. On Windows 7, never mind it being a 'Windows 8' driver.

I have endured this issue since I got a new audio card Sapphire hd 7950 in my GigabyteGA990FXA UD3 board , i use the realtek r271 driver i downloaded which was the latest . i also have an onkyotx sr608 via HDMI as well.
in over a year, i have not succeeded in making the sound control panel work as it does (properly) in my other computer with a Gig GA890FXA UD5 board with another amd gpu asus 5870. Both gpus on both boards are current with the latest drivers and catalyst 13.8, have done the betas to 13.10b but went back to the standard release. the 890fxa board works properly, as you described and has done so for 2years.
i have also experimented on the new gigabyte board(990fxa) with realtek audio drivers back to 6.something. all of them , have been lacking part of the sound control panel and do not play sound through even though they can get set up. I do not have any speakers (analogue) on the newer board, so do not get that interface, but i did on the 890fxa board before i moved it away from the onkyo and use only the back panel analogue jacks for 5.1 logitech. it still had the same interface prior to moving it. not this latest board . both boards have the same alc889 realtek though the software seems different for dolby and , therefore , i have just lived with the other issues with no sound. i run a toslink optical from the tv to the onkyo and another one from the gigabyte board output to the other in port on the onkyo. i have to keep switching back and forth for different applications and stuff though there is some i set up in the onkyo for 'last config' and it will switch from hdmi to optical automatically. but i still can not get a few things to work properly (audio only issue) but the problem does not exist when i try to duplicate it with the 890fxa computer. i have done multiple clean installs, of each item that could be re installed and just can not make it work as the other board does with the audio functioning. i have been to multiple forums for each product , software and hardware and get nowhere. i have both ati and realtek hdmi drivers but only one shows up or none show up , in the interface. all are showing in the programs and features' and are 'device is working' only it wont in some circumstances. i have tried with only one of the hdmi drivers (ati/amd and/or realtek hdmi). name it , i tried it and still wind up with the exact same set up as when i started trying to 'fix' it
My tv is an LG 42LD550 does not support ARC but has the optical output and Onkyo has the TV setting so work around \ I am sure this wont answer your question, only sharing the lengths i went to addressing similar issues though mine was more complex.
