Thank you NoN, but I'm still only seeing 2.78 available at Realtek.

R2.79 is now up on Realtek on my area in the USA, Brink. R2.79 (7541) is also available from Softpedia [32bit] [64bit] if Realtek sites are busy.
If you still see 2.78 on Realtek web site, try again the next day.

And Microsoft posted v7535 (older) just recently [doh!]

Update 6/29: AH shoot! the digital signature CAT files only have OS:Attr of 2:10.0 which means they're WHQL for Win10 only - don't install v7535 if using Win8.1, Win7 or earlier.

Microsoft has recently posted v7540, v7543 and v7544 simultaneously on MS Update Catalog this afternoon on 6/29/2015 (no direct download links this time). v6.0.1.7544 is the most recent version. I downloaded these packages myself and checked the CAT files on these 3 new versions and they are WHQL for Windows from Vista to Win10 [aka. OS:Attr is 2.6.0,2:6.1,2:6.2,2:6.3,2:10.0]

Btw, these new driver downloads from MS are 64bit (x64) only; no 32bit versions of these are currently available

v7541 (6/18/2015) [R2.79] is also available from Microsoft (no direct download links for this one) - no setup EXE installers bundled for this one - MS posted them 6/25/2015 [both 32bit & 64bit editions available]

v7548 (6/30/2015) also available from Microsoft (posted 7/07/2015) - ah direct and "indirect" links for this one - hee hee
(32bit) (64bit) - WHQL for Windows from Vista to 10

I have a problem with an Asus K72JT. The sound quality was awful, I couldn't disable some weird equalizer setting that was ruining the sound quality (it was resetting each time I came back), so I choose to "uninstall" the driver in the compmgmt.msc panel. I tried reinstalling it from the 2.79 package from realtek.

What's weird is that windows tells me the driver is properly installed, but I can't play any sound.

When I click on the volume icon in the task bar, some dialog window search for a problem and tells me the audio device is disabled.

I also got a WHQL .cab file I extracted it, but I'm not sure how to install those drivers.

For some reason I can't get into the windows update catalog thing on internet explorer, it refuses to install itself.

That is sometimes the wrong way to remove existing Realtek audio driver through compmgmt.msc panel, jokoon (unless for some unknown reason the installation was somehow botched).
There should be an entry called Realtek High Definition Audio in the Programs and Features control panel, which is where you should be uninstalling the whole realtek audio driver package, not thru Device Manager. And you should restart the computer after removing or installing the Realtek audio drivers...always.

when installing new Realtek audio drivers from a CAB file, read this Sevenforums topic on how to install new drivers thru Device Manager. And you have to restart the computer after installing the new Realtek drivers for them to take effect [cuz Device Manager will say so].

and note to Brink: version 6.0.1.7553 (7/7/2015) has just been posted at MS Update Catalog this morning of 7/13/2015. [x86-32bit] [x64-64bit] These drivers are WHQL for Windows from Vista to 10.

Thank you, I'll try this later as it's my mother computer and she's blaming me, but won't let me try to fix it.
