Any way to test for that short of taking the laptop apart? Or is plugging in an external mic the definitive test?

What is so strange about this is that the mic worked just fine, until I plugged in an external mic a year ago. If I could just find some way of re-installing the internal mic (that would actually install)... wishful thinking, probably.

Again, thanks for all your help!

Outside chance the mic jack is the problem. On some systems there is an extra contact that opens when an external mic is connected and closed (making contact) when the external mic is removed.

You would have to get inside the Laptop to access the jack, and usually they are closed so you can't work on it. However, many also have a "daughter board" that contains the I/O jacks and that board can be replaced.

Depends on how bad you want the internal mic to work.

As long as I can Skype on my phone, not that bad - LOL. Wonder if (assuming the mic itself isn't broken) an upgrade to Win 10 might fix it.

I doubt that it will fix it. You can try.

Before that, I thought of a long, LONG shot. Uninstall Realtek and drivers, and install a much older version. Or is that idea insane?

With the symptoms and what has been tried, I doubt that any software will fix it.

No use chasing your tail when its most likely a hardware problem.
