    Stereo mix missing.

    Hi

If a laptop does not have stereo mix, and is using an external sound card.. which drivers should you look for?

The driver for the laptop or the sound card?

Whichever sound card you are using. In this case if you are using an external then that is the drivers to use (and you should disable the internal sound in the BIOS to avoid any conflicts).

There are a few sound devices that do not have Stereo Mix (SoundBlaster calls this "What You Hear"). I have a new Toshiba laptop and the Stereo Mix is not available in that (my only complaint about the laptop).

The drivers are not the only issue, as noted with my Toshiba, its not available period because of the Toshiba hardware implementation of the sound device.

It may just not be shown? In the Sound Panel, Recording Section, RIGHT click in a blank area of that panel and then click to Show Disabled and Disconnected Devices. If you are lucky, Stereo Mix will now be shown and you can enable it.
