window 7 upgrade no sound issue need help!

Hi Any response will help, I've upgraded from vista to 7 and I am getting no sound, I've searched, searched and tried alot of different things, I see alot of people on this forum with the same issues, but I've tried most of them. I've installed and unistalled all the different drivers from realtek, but no luck. I have realtek high definition sound but no hdmi output. In my device manager it says the sound driver is installed properly, but when I tried to test the sound it fails to test tone, I don't know if it has to deal with an audio codec. I have regular speaker that connect to a sound jack. At this point I am quite desperate. I've spent all night trying to figure this out. thanks

You probably have already checked this but just in case, have you gone into control panel, sounds, and made sure "speakers" (that's what it's called in my system) is set as the default device. If not, right click it and set it as the default device. That's the only idea I have. Hopefully someone else will have some more suggestions for you if that doesn't work.

hey harpua, thanks for the reply, yah I've tried that...seems like I've tried everything, it's a pretty new computer, and got the upgrade for free. I heard good things about window so I was really anxious to upgrade. If I knew there would be more problems, I would have kept vista instead. Stupid Gateway didn't even come with a vista disc.

Windows 7 has a built in troubleshooter that may help identify your issue. To find it type 'trouble' in the search text bar at the start menu and it should show up above.

You may also want to go to Gateway's support and drivers website, make sure you know your specific model and look for W7 or even Vista drivers for sound for your PC to download and install.

As for not having a Vista disk (most OEM's provide the system disk on a partition on the original factory installed hard drive), as you have installed W7, to get back to Vista (assuming you have not deleted that windows partition) your only option would be to reset the computer to factory settings which will re-install Vista but you may loose any data on your W7 installation including any files from your previous installation of Vista of you did an upgrade. The procedure for doing so should be in your manual or find your specific manual on their website also.

    Thanks everyone,

I solved the issue but not sure why how I fixed it, but I re-install window 7, clean install, when it prompted me to update and install I declined, and didn't upgrade anything. After the installation, I got sound. strange but I got it working...
