Plugging earphone when video is playing freezes the laptop

For the past few days, if I connect my earphone(3.5mm audio jack) when some video is being played, be it in Facebook or YouTube or in the vlc media player
    1. The laptop starts hanging. The video that is being played breaks, the system becomes extremely slow, can not even move the cursor.
    2. The internet is disconnected (i.e.) I use the WiFi, in the notification bar at the bottom, it simply is disconnected. The WiFi icon only has a red 'X', and no WiFi network is shown, even though my WiFi is switched.
    3. I have to restart the machine to use it normally
But if the video is not playing, and I connect the audio jack, nothing happens.
Has any one happened to have had such an issue ? Or can anyone suggest how do I start with identifying the root cause ? Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

first try fully uninstalling the audio driver & reinstall it.
if that doesn't work, you'll need to reinstall the operating system to see if the operating system has become corrupted (or try one of the scans to repair|replace broken system files first before reinstalling).
then if neither one of those fixes it, i'd suggest you've got an electrical problem with the motherboard (either the motherboard as a whole or specifically with the soundcard) and you'd either need to get it repaired or buy a new motherboard.
