Ok so there must be a Microsoft sticker on the bottom of the machine with details of the OS that was originally installed.

Now I am assuming as the machine is an older one that could have been XP or Vista the latter maybe not but just what is on that sticker? Plus if it now has Ultimate who put that version on the machine??

I am just trying to help you out by clearing a few things up here because as I said if someone else installed that version of Windows on the machine for you or before they sold it to you you have recourse to getting your money back.

I did not pay for the laptop..
Chances that it'd been bought with vista installed
and than they bought new laptops and win7 license for the new and old ones

Hmm well whatever they did they should have put the stickers on the machine it is a part of the licence rules as stated by Microsoft. I am just puzzled as to why Ultimate if the machine is for general use

Sounds like the school was naughty and broke the rules, uninstall the old driver in device manger, reboot without internet on, and install this.
