External speakers? What type? USB connected or using the Headphone jack on the PC?
If the external speakers are connected to the headphone jack, the Headphones, most likely, need to be set as the default playback device. That is usually automatic when headphones (or external speakers) are connected to the headphone jack but in some cases it needs to be done manually.
