No sound coming out from on-board sound card.

Hi,

I've encountered a problem lately where I couldn't get any audio from my on-board sound card. It just suddenly stopped after I booted it up the other day. I haven't installed any software or drivers that could conflict with the system before that.

I have a Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2 (Rev 3.0) motherboard running Windows 7 (64Bit) with updated and proper drivers installed.

Solutions I've already tried:
*Reinstalling the drivers. (Uninstall -> Action -> Scan for hardware changes)
*Restarting Windows Audio from Services.
*Running the Windows built-in troubleshooter.
*Speakers set as default device and not muted.

However, I tried my external USB sound card which is a, Creative SB1140, plugged it to my PC and plugged my speakers to the USB sound card. The sound played perfectly fine. I really have no idea what caused this. I really need your help guys.

Thanks.

What is shown in the Device Manager in the Sounds, Video and game controllers section?
Post a screenshot of that Device Manager section.

Do you have the actual hardware sound driver or only the generic High Definition Audio driver? If you only have the High Definition you need to install the correct hardware sound driver.
Also, uninstalling then scan for hardware doesn't always fix problems. You have to uninstall then restart the PC and let Windows "find new hardware" and install on the reboot. Just uninstall reinstall without rebooting can result in the problem still being there.

The device manager shows that it's working just fine.

So I uninstalled > rebooted > installed the latest driver from the manufacturer's website. Didn't work.

I've done a fresh install of Windows 7 again with updated drivers from the manufacturer's website. Still no luck. I'm guessing that the on-board sound card is dead.

Now any recommendations or suggestions whether I should get a PCI or external USB sound card?

Get a PCI, they're not that expensive. You can get a Diamond Extreme at Wally World (Walmart online) for under $20. Here's the general search which includes other sound cards and other retailers.
