Windows 7: How to remove the generic sound volume controls/mixer?

How to remove the generic sound volume controls/mixer?

I have just installed the Realtek HD Audio driver from Gigabytes's website after formatting my PC. However, the generic sound volume controls/mixer is still visible, and when I mute the sound on the Realtek HD Audio manager, the mute sign appears on the generic sound controls icon, instead on the Audio manager icon (cross out sign), which is how it was before formatting my PC.

I'm using only headphones, and have also noticed that the volume is lower than before formatting (less gain). Maybe this is the reason?

OS - Windows 7 64-bit.
Motherboard - Gigabyte H67M-D2-B3.

Anyone knows?

Check the Device Manager. Uninstall the generic sound driver if it is still listed (e.g High Defintion Audio) leaving the Realtek and the ATI High Defintion Audio which is for HDMI Audio. Also, the Speakers (Realtek) should be set as default audio playback device.
