loss of sound when playing music from cd's
hi ...
i seem to have a problem to do with playing mp3 files from disks.
for years, i've only used vlc media player for both audio and video files and also for years, it's worked very well and given me no trouble at all.
what i'm having is hassle over the last 6 days or so and only concerns audio ... video continues to work well.
by choice, my settings have always been geared to work manually, again, without problems.
before the problem ... when i insert a cd, i scroll to the cd/dvd drive in windows explorer and open it then highlight whatever number of music files i want to play and click to activate. in vlc player, the choice appears in the list to be played and the file at the top starts playing. if i only want a particular track played, i highlight it etc. and it plays.
equally, this also applied to the few music downloads that were burnt to cds. they always played perfectly too.
since this non-audio problem started, none of the bought cd's or the tracks i downloaded and burnt work.
what happened is ... if i've targeted more than one track intending to play say, from the top of the list, ... as soon as i click it, the vlc start/stop arrowhead icon at the bottom left of the window blinks and what looks like a grey bar starts to scroll down the file list in the vlc window as if it was scanning each of them to see if any file works (and plays). if i attempt to play a single track, it 'scans' and them stops. a few times, the 'grey'bar mentioned above, also jumps all over the track list
before it stops.
i also tried this on the laptop and sadly, got the same result.
finally, when i inserted the a few audio cd's in our stand-alone cd/dvd player, all the cd's worked perfectly.
the vlc settings were checked but no changes had altered so were left alone. the programme was also updated. all the media settings in default programms in (windows) control panel had all the audio and video settings, including the cda format, geared to the vlc programme. i also ran a complete windows update.
besides vlc, i also use MPC-HC media player but although i think it's nowhere as good as vlc, all the cd's i picked out at random, the cd's played okay.
audio tracks stored on the hard drive work, vlc ditto thus the leads and the full audio system are working.
bought programmes (data) cd's in the cd/dvd drive appears to work because i've installed a couple of (data) programmes since the fault started thus the disk drive must be working but i'm starting to have doubts about this.
all cd's played on the stand-alone cd player play perfectly so the audio on the cd's must also be okay.
if my befuddled mind is still working, that only leaves the bought cd's and those cd's that contain downloaded music tracks and burnt to disks, none of which are producing any sound.
i have no idea what else i can check.
i'm running W7Pro with the latest windows updates and vlc v2.2.6. also running a 250gb hd and fibre b/band if that's any help.
i'm sure that the solution is a simple one but i can't see it.
i would very much like to hear from anyone who might be able to help me please.
michael.
