Samsung laptop: 3.5 headphone/mic jack doesn't recognize external mics

I checked to make sure that my drivers are up to date, checked the device manager for any missing drivers, scanned for your hardware changes, but still can't get an external mic to be recognized.

This jack is combo headphone – microphone jack. Seems to work fine for headphones.

Looking to get this to work or work the around is that I bought a USB to 3.5mm audio adapter coming in tomorrow

I tend to be the one to solve other people's technical problems, and I tenaciously tend to dig until I get it fixed.

Any ideas?

I had a similar situation with my cell phone and a headset (with mic and earphone): My headset had the old style connector (2.5 mm), but my cell phone had the new iPhone style connector (3.5 mm).

I got an adapter which allows me to use the old-style headset with an iPhone connector. Works perfectly.

I stayed with the old-style headset because it works so well, and it cost only about $10. And I prefer wired over Bluetooth.

I'm not sure if this is exactly your situation, but this is what happened with me.
