windows media player for windows 7 corrupted.

My videos on media player are playing sound but not the video. some videos are AVI, MP4, XESC etc so i believe its my codec? i have tried all windows fault finding like reinstall etc.

hi, thanks for the quick response. I'm struggling here to find why this has happened. lately my PC cutout for this reason which i cant remember so i believe files got corrupted.

Not sure how to check which codecs i'm using? ok i will try vlc

You could narrow it down a bit by installing VLC [FREE] and see if the videos plays on that. It is very versatile and pretty much plays anything you throw at it.

Hi! VLC is excellent advice, and I've actually done that after running through all of the suggested fixes for my non-functional Windows Media Player.

My Media Player tries to open the files it should, but then errors saying it has encountered a problem OR it says it cannot open the file. VLC has no such problem with those files.

After running through the easy fixes and a lot of the more difficult ones, is there anything else you know of that I might try to get Media Player back up and running? I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've deleted subdirectories containing Media Player. Redone the libraries. Reinstalled. Copied files from a working Win7 Pro install of Media Player to the Win7 Pro PC on which Media Player won't run at all.

My own $.02.

I don't use VLC. I don't use WMP. I don't use any external "codec-pack", of any kind (no need to). Tried them all and none is a better player than PotPlayer with ordinary standard Windows 7 Media Foundation.

I use PotPlayer 64-bit, along with its "default_more.dsf" skin (very traditional looking player interface skin). Plays absolutely everything audio and video without the need for any additional codecs. Uses MediaInfo DLL for complete presentation of file info/properties. Extensive customization available, use of hardware deinterlacing (e.g. for sharp progressive playback of WMC 1080i WTV recorded TV files), seemingly endless ways to tweak audio/video playback as well as user interface, playlist, etc.

I especially like its "windowless" presentation (from that skin) so that 1920x1080 fullscreen uses all screen real estate without the need for any scaling. You're watching the video only, with no distractions. Hover the cursor over the bottom of the screen and the player control panel appears until you move the cursor away.

I could go on and on. I'll be glad to share my INI file and pure-and-simple "default_more.dsf" file, to save you the trouble of learning and start-up, but you may have to change language to English (from default Korean).
