Windows 7 default audio not working but sounds played with software

Thanks for the list: I already use about half of those tools on top of Emsisoft Emergency Kit for manual scanning and Eset Smart Security as antivirus.
The Windows Update process has been already performed; it took less than 6/7 minutes to list the hundreds of updates. But I preferred to upgrade 'organically' by types of updates choosing e.g. Critical first, then Security, Cumulative, language packs, etc..
All in all it was a 3/4 hrs process, most of it unattended. Other details are posted in the Repair Install thread.
What it counts is I've got those sounds back.

Yep, what matters is that your issue is resolved!

Take a look at Dism++ | New Windows Utility, it provides quicker updates, a plethora of tools, and separates updates into categories. When you choose update, it will have popups that provides you with info on the updates, issues, etc. Very useful.
