I'm not sure, but I solved it myself. I finally discovered that the speakers were not set to default, even though I had set them to default. Windows sometimes changes things without my instruction.

I had similar problem in windows 7 Pro. Sometimes the sound worked and sometimes it didn't. I found that if I selected 'sleep' and then woke it up, the sound was fine. I don't why it works but it does.
