How do I Restore Volume Adjustment Slider Bar in Windows 7?

Hello: Not sure why but most recently when I click on the speaker icon in my taskbar, the volume adjustment slider bar does not appear to allow me to adjust the volume. Actually when I click on the speaker icon, nothing appears at all. Normally the slide bar is displayed to allow me to adjust the volume. Wondering if anyone can provide a remedy or fix for this sudden issue?
    Thank you.

    Hi oaky-

Periodically that icon doesn't appear when I boot up and rebooting solves the problem (is it magic?)

If you right click on it and select Playback, what is the active device?

Hi W2 and thank you for your help regarding my issue with the volume adjustment slider bar in windows 7. When I right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, nothing shows or appears. Same thing when I left click on it, which normally will display the volume adjustment slider bar.

In Control Panel, Sound, what is the default shown for your sound in Playback? If you click on it and select Properties, Levels, can you adjust the volume in Playback Control?
