    Intermittent no sound

Win 7 Pro, 64-bit, Real Tek High Definition Audio set as default. My speakers are not muted. For about a week sometimes I have audio, sometimes not. When I do not have audio, it pertains to system sounds, sounds from Youtube, videos, etc. Network controller has no driver, but Windows will not find a driver.

I started having other problems in addition to this, and after trying every "fix" I could think of or find online, I think I've corrected all the problems except the sound. Again, I've tried every fix I can think of or find online. Nothing has solved the problem. Yesterday I had sound, but when I booted this morning, no sound.

This is a recurring situation. Please help. Thank you.

    Hi muffiemaqe-

Do you have the latest Realtek drivers installed? If not, install the latest.

If that doesn't help, I suggest going to Accessories, Command Prompt.

Right click on it and select "run as administrator."

At the prompt, type- sfc /scannow

and let it run. If it finds and fixes any files, reboot and run it again.

Thank you. I have done all that. Yesterday I finally discovered that Windows was intermittently changing the speakers to "un-default," even though I had checked that. Good ole' Microsoft. Anyway, later this morning and later yesterday, I have sound through my speakers. This whole thing has been a big challenge!

Check something. Go to Control Panel, Administator Tools, Task Scheduler, Task Scheduler Library. Click on Windows and open MultiMedia. Is the System Sound set to start up at log on with any user?

Yes, it is set to log on with any user.

Interesting: AVG and Avast are both under Task Scheduler Library, and neither are currently on my computer.

(Later today I again had no sound for a short time; then I fiddled with it and got it back.)

If those two aren't shown in Programs and Features, I would delete them from the Task Scheduler (if you already haven't).

I'm wondering if your power settings has something to do with that although, in my little experience, I've never heard of it affecting that.

Power settings? I don't know what that is.

Don't bother with the power settings. I have you mixed up with someone else who's having a problem which happens at a set frequency.

The power options control when your computer goes to sleep and your monitor turns off when you're not using it. There are numerous other things in the Advanced settings.

If you want to look at them, go to Control Panel and select Power Options.

I'm wondering if there's a problem with the speaker cables or the port their plugged into.

Go to Control Panel, Device Manager. When the speakers aren't working, are there any problems (exclamation point in yellow triangle) in Sound, Video and Game Controllers or System Devices?

No for speakers, but several days ago I noticed Network Controller (and an "unknown" under Other Devices) are not operable. Windows is unable to find drivers. I'm not sure what Network Controller is supposed to do. Internet is working fine, and my network is fine, too.

I don't think you need to worry about the Network Controller. On this system with a NVIDIA graphics card, it automatically installs an NVIDIA Network Controller but I don't think it's necessary. If you want to install the driver, you can get one here-

Network Controller Drivers Download for Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, XP

I would set a system restore point before installing it.

In regards to the unknown device, I had an unknown device on this system after I installed a new hard drive and the OS. It turned out that I didn't reinstall the driver for my media card reader that came with the system and I've never used.

In any event, I don't think those things have anything to do with your problem.

What is the exact model number for your motherboard? Do you have a sound card installed?
