Volume Adjustment Slider Bar Missing after Clicking on Speaker Icon

Hello: Wondering if someone can provide me with a solution to the following issue I'm experiencing regarding the volume icon on my task bar? I'm using windows 7, Google Chrome and as of a few days ago, when I click on the speaker icon located in the task bar, the volume slider bar does not appear to allow me to adjust the volume as it usually did or does. Appreciate it if someone could provide me with a fix to this sudden problem.
Thank you.

Hi oaky-

When you click on that icon, what appears? Perhaps a screen shot would help?
