Windows 7: Microphone not being read...

Microphone not being read...

This is really getting annoying.

So, I have a Mac Pro running Windows 7 64-bit through Boot Camp. I also have a Razer Carcharias gaming headset. I plugged in the Line-Out and Mic cables from the carcharias into the mac. The audio works great, as always, but the mic doesn't work at all.

I've been reading online that it's because the Mac Pro has a "Line-In" port which doesn't supply the Power that a mic needs to run. Now, this would make sense... but I've used the Mic before. Back when I had Windows XP, the mic worked great. Now, with Windows 7, it doesn't work at all.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Hi.

No, that would not make any sense for Apple to include a mic port on the hardware if it was incapable of using it.

Right click on the speaker icon in the system tray near the clock. Recording devices. Right click on the mic and set it as default communication device. If you don't see it, right click on anything there and set it to show disabled and also disconnected devices.

If that doesn't help you see the mic:

See if you can install the XP driver you have, for audio. Use the device manager. Right click on the audio device. Update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Double click on the .inf (that was extracted from the driver install). Hit ok. Hit next. After it's done isntalling, reboot.

Yeah, I've tried that and it doesn't work. The input volume is maxed, nothing is muted, and it's enabled, etc.

I use Realtek Audio Drivers, would the XP Version found on their site work?

You may try. Rollback using the device manager if there's an issue.

DUDE I have a mac pro running 7 also, I bought the same head set for my steam games from "best buy" today and I'm having the same exact problem. Did you find a work around yet? Seems like a driver issue to me...

It could be, since it worked when I had Windows XP. I kinda gave in and just ordered a Razer Megalodon Headset though... They connect over (only) USB so they'll work for sure.

Send me a PM if you get it working, though.

Hey Unholymist,
I got in touch with apple support about this and the jack in the back is an "analog in" which is different than a microphone jack. I took my headset back and got a USB one too, which I like better because the input is digital!

As per your earlier post, an "analog in" jack is in fact "unpowered". you could plug any sound playing device into that analog in jack and the mac would capture that sound for use in video/audio editing but an unpowered source like a gaming headset won't work.

Dude if you get a chance pick up the "EVGA GeForce GTX 285 Graphics card for Mac" from the Apple store (Mac Pro early 2008 and 2009 supported) It's only like 450.00 and it's a 1 gigabyte nVidia Cuda Card and it runs any game at 2560 x 1600 res. on a 30" cinema perfectly and smoothly with power to spare. Amazing graphics power for the price, highly recomended! My only gripe with the macs was the lack of good video card iptions for gaming on the windows side and this is what so many of us were waiting for. It's SICK! Good luck dude...

Yeah, I got it when it came out, love it! I, also, was waiting for it. Up until then I had been using an 8800GT. Incredible improvement.

Just curious, what headset did you get?

Plantronics Gamecom. Don't know which model as I threw the box away already but it has some kind of funny little virtual sound card on the cable which claims to give you a little bit of a 5.1 experience. I have noticed I'm able to tell which side/front/back the bad guys are at in game so it's kinda cool for sure.
