Sound stopped working

About a week ago the sound just stopped working on my Win7 Prof SP1 64bit Dell system. Sound is on the motherboard. Up until then I have used it every day. There is no indication, I can find, that the sound system is not working. Everything shows is in working order except its not. I tried checking and updating drivers and have gone through steps from several solution suggestions for similar problems online but nothing has helped. A sound test reports both speakers are working and if I touch the speaker while testing I can feel a slight pulse on each speaker but no sound. I have verified the speakers are working on another Win7 system. One odd thing I noticed is when I go to playback devices it shows me multiple copies of speakers DbusAudio ready (15) and Line LitexMedia Virtual Audio Cable (WDM) ready (10) plus 1 DbusAudio speaker set as default device. My Windows updates is current. This probably is not relevant but just encase... As a last resort I found a pci sound card, plugged it in and tried to install it. The system does not seem to recognize it. Perhaps I need to disable the motherboard sound first? Any suggestions? Thx.

You would most likely need to disable onboard sound in order to use a dedicated sound card. I did this with mine so there were no conflicts.

As to your sound issue. It sounds like the wrong adapter or what ever it's called is selected. I'm thinking your audio is selected from the virtual audio cable. Is there a reason why you need the virtual audio cable software? If not, uninstall it.

Right click the speaker icon, chose playback devices and set your default.

How do I disable the onboard sound?

Considering what you said, while writing this reply I set as default every one of the speaker choices then tested it. When I got to the last one labeled High Def Audio Device I got sound! No idea how this ever got changed its not something one even looks at without a reason.

I do not understand why there are so many speaker and cable choices listed or if there is anyway to delete the extra choices?

Run Revouninstaller and find anything related to a virtual cable and uninstall. It must have come from a software you installed.

Sound stopped working
Hi, I have a quite odd problem. I have an Abit AB9 Pro mobo with a Realtek sound chip on it. Earlier today I rebooted my machine and when it came back up Windows told me I didn't have a sound card installed. I went into device manager and I saw that under "Sound, video and game controllers"...
