I am trying to transfer my wav music cd's to compact format eg. MP3 files to use it in my car and looking for a free program which can do this job. Anyone knows a simple free program for doing this job.

What do you mean by "wav music cd"? Audio CDs do not use the wav file format, so do you mean a regular audio CD, or do you mean a computer CD storing a bunch of wav files?
I'll assume it's not the latter, since it's not hard to find any number of simple converters that will change audio file formats from wav to mp3.
If you're talking about ripping audio CDs, though, the program I use for that is CDex. It can convert an audio CD to individual digital files of either wav or mp3 format. There's even a portable version, which is convenient if this is not a task you'll be doing regularly.
Beware that some audio CDs do not include the song metadata, so CDex may rip them simply as "Track 01", "Track 02", etc. In that case, you may want to add your own metadata tags after the fact with something like MP3tag.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed I am talking about ripping audio CDs to convert to individual mp3 file which I can burn to a cd. With CDex I have no experience but somebody suggest that the free version of EZ CD Audio Converter is working good. What is your experience with CDex and where it can be downloaded?

I have no experience with EZ CD Audio Converter, but I don't doubt programs like it could be as good as CDex. I don't pretend CDex is better than anything else, just that it works well and fits my needs. When I tested these things years ago, CDex seemed to give me cleaner rips with fewer dropped frames than the others I tried, but I think a lot of them have improved since then.
I linked to the wikipedia page because some people may find the wikipedia description helpful. In the upper-right panel is a link to CDex's website. There's also a link at the bottom of the page to the "Official website". Of course, Google also knows where the official site is.
If you just want to give CDex a test run, though, you might try the portable version first so you don't have to install anything on your computer. If you choose not to keep it, just throw away the CDex folder, no uninstall necessary. And if you do like it, throw it away and install the permanent version.
Oh, and in case you haven't found it by then, the portable version has a link to the official website on its "About" page.
