@ stormy 13 .... I have external speakers on this desktop. My monitor doesn't have any associatons with internal speakers, so I can't change things, even if I wanted to.

Jacee all those files listed are the default audio files that get installed with Windows. All they provide is enough basic functionality to get sound, and don't provide anything more than basic options as far as configuring the sound goes unlike what you would get with the actual drivers for the sound card. To see the full list of what should be shown there have a look here,

Jacee from the look of that screen shot you and that it is showing two listings "High Definition Audio Device", I'd wager a guess that one is your onboard audio (Sigmatel) and the second is the audio that is integrated onto your ATI HD 2600 Pro (Realtek for this one, and is included with the ATI drivers). This is from the specs for your motherboard,

and would be listed as "IDT (or possibly Sigmatel, as they are one and the same) High definition Audio CODEC" in Device Manager if the proper drivers are installed for it. The second one if as I suspect is for your video card once the drivers are installed would show up as "ATI High Definition Audio Device".

You won't until you install the drivers. Unfortunately the best you're going to find for yours from Intel is the Vista driver,

Audio: IDT* 92XX Driver

which as far as I know should work in Windows 7.

Thanks stormy. I have no problems with my sound, so I think I'll just put my head back in the sand

Might be a good idea. Just remember that if you want to use anything more than stereo (assuming you get the same in the speaker settings as salisbury88), then this is something you'll have to tackle.

Dell Latitude D630

I had the exact same problem on my D630 after upgrading to Windows 7. Couldn't get rid of the default High Defination Audio entry and there were no entries under disabled devices. Finally got the external speakers to work by doing this: in device manager, deleted both the audio device and speaker entries; rebooted; downloaded the Vista Sigmatel audio driver from the Dell web site and expanded it to a directory on my hard drive; IGNORED the install failed message of the Sigmatel; went into the properties of the High Def entry and dug down to the Driver tab; selected Update Driver and pointed it to the directory where I'd expanded the Sigmatel Vista files; rebooted. After that, my external speakers came up fine!
