Have you been to the Dell website and downloaded the latest drivers?

Yes i went there and the "latest" drivers were from 2006. Hopefully I was just being dumb and not looking int he correct place but I tried to no avail.

Sorry, I'm a little confused... by "minus the sound", do you mean:
    a) you get no sound whatsoever, only stutters and echoes every so often
    b) the sound works, but stutters and echoes every so often, in every program that uses audio
    c) the sound works, but stutters and echoes every so often, while using games w/vent.
    d) other (please explain!)

What model Dell is it? I can check the downloads, but if it'a a 2006 dated driver then it's not for Win 7 and probably not for Vista either and you need Vista drivers, at a minimum.

Stuttering on Dell's is generally the wrong drivers. On older XP systems (PC's that came with XP) if users used non-Dell drivers that would happen.

Some drivers come with a "Sonnd Enhancement" panel that you can set echo, reverb, chorus, etc. If you have that and have any of those enabled that can cause what you are hearing.

Finally, many users on the Dell forum with older PC's that do not have Dell support (at least for Vista) have resorted to installing a separate PCI sound card (on Desktop systems) to remedy sound issues.

After installing the best driver, if it still doesn't work well, check to make sure there is no cpu throttling in the bios or in an app that starts with Windows.

You can see any throttling going on using CPU-Z in Windows.

On ASUS, the throttling is called Cool N Quiet. On others, it's named differently.

    Use the device manager.

Right click the audio. Update driver software. Browse my computer. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Find the extracted .inf. Double click it. Hit ok. Hit next. Reboot if necessary after it installs, but shouldn't be.
