Me three! Between reinstalling drivers and the odd microsoft update over the last couple of months my sound has settled down and no more glitches.

I too thought it woz not enough processor power coz I run a Barton 3000 on a 7 yr old socket A motherboard - but no it is purely crap implementation of various drivers and their interaction between each other on Windows 7.
(By the way all my MP3's are played/recorded on highest MP3 setting 320Kbps)

I was checking out the memory area used (in 'system') and Realtek shares with USB 2.0 chipset (with a very close/similar numeric memory mapped area)
- poss could the glitch problem be when USB Wireless download/Mouse movement/Sound kick into action etc
yes i too would love to blame the blad implemented drivers for this but....in xp this problem didn't exist (at least for me) so i blame windows 7 definitely.

Run the DPC Latency Checker. If you are in the green, you are OK. But red bars usually indicate a driver problem. DPC LC can help you identify them.
