cannot set headphone as default playback

    Hi,

I'm getting no sound from my headphones.

Brand new head phones plugged into front panel jack. Its set as default communication device and works fine with skype etc...

I want to watch movies with the audio going through my headphones but the sound still comes out of the laptops speakers.

I tried to set the headphones to Default playback device but it won't allow it.

Can anyone help pleaseeeee..... it driving me nuts!

    Hi there!
I've got exactly the same problem. It is so frustrating. Did you ever figure it out!?
I'm just stuck on 'default communications device'.
I noticed that in the volume mixer it shows what applications are operating through which device...
    Annoying.

I had to set the playback device for each programe!!! (very annoying) i went through the options in windows media player and VLC player and set the headphones to default playback device. Its a solution if you just need them for watching films or music.
    Hope this helps

Has anybody discovered a solution to this? I'm having the same problem, I can't make my headphones the default device. I can still hear out of them when the speakers and dual headphones are set as the default, but there's a noticeable drop in sound quality and I bought an expensive pair of headphones for a reason. It's really starting to get on my nerves.

Yes, I did. and moreover both laptop and external speakers work when you test them. Now I set external speaker as default for my audio player, but do you know if I can do the same for my Internet browser and VLC?

It works! I deleted a sound driver, namely IDT. go to your control panel, device manager and check the sound, video and game controllers tab - youll see it in there if you have it. if you do you can remove it there and reboot. It will install again when you open Windows put I guess it's another version as everything works!

HP 615 playback default still screwed after fix

I have tried the fix where you delete old IDT drivers, then let W7 reinstall them. On re-boot and when new drivers installed it worked fine, but on the next re-boot it was stuck again. Can't set default, and output goes to headphones only when the application is able to demand it. I tried this three times. Each time it fixed it then screwed on re-boot. Any ideas anyone? HP says re-build the computer from scratch. Great!

probably the driver.. uninstall the old sound driver and then download the latest one.. In case the driver only available for vista and not windows seven. run the driver in compatibility mode :)
