Problems with sound in windows 7

    Hi Guys

I read that a lot of people are having problems with there soundcards and windows 7 (64 bits). I guess I’m just 1 more guy on that list.
Well I recently bought a Asus Rampage II Extreme , I7 920 and 12 Gb of ram. With Mobo I got a soundcard Supreme FX from Creative (PCI express)
And then I installed windows 7 64 bit
And for like a week everything worked fine. Then suddenly one day I lost sound in windows. Windows does recognize my sound card, but it cannot play any sound.
Well since I didn’t make backup of image I reinstalled windows and I had sound once again.
Then last night I made some windows update and today when I got back from work I lost sound again. I tried to restore image to the point where I created backup and it worked, I had sound again.
So I’m not that sure that the problem is a device driver, but I must say I spent more or less 6 hours now reading and trying everything but I simply can’t get any sound to play again.
I have tried PAX drivers, i have tried solution from Darasain in topic https://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/1907-asus-supremefx-x-fi.html
It didn’t work, I have tried solution from HikerRemastered in the same topic and that didn’t work neither.
After a couple of hours I replaced the soundcard with my old SoundBlaster Audigy, like that did any good J, no no nothing new, no sound what so ever
Now I’m back with new soundcard Supreme FX, and wondering what do to.
I can imagine that the problem is somewhere in windows, because when I went back to restore point I got sound. And after that I installed Kaspesky internet Security 2010 and turn my pc off. Next time I started windows I lost sound again. If anyone have any Idea please help, any advise is appreciated.

    Kind regards
    Very desperate Mik

    Mik018, welcome to the forums.

First thing is that sound card, it in no way shape or form is from Creative, it is nothing more than an ADI/Soundmax based card. The only thing it gets from Creative is the X-Fi MB software, and you have to get that from Asus. If fact it isn't really a sound card, more like a riser card for the onboard audio.

As far as the drivers go, no the drivers from Creative will not work, like the X-Fi software you have to get it from Asus. Have you tried the latest Soundmax driver Asus has for it dated November 11 last year?

And after that I installed Kaspesky internet Security 2010 and turn my pc off. Next time I started windows I lost sound again.
Once you get the sound working again don't install Kapersky for a few days, leave things alone and make sure everything is working. Then make sure you have a good restore point or image of your Windows install and then try Kapersky again. If the sound fails again after, restore it back to when it worked, and then i would start looking at another AV.

I removed Kapsersky, and installed soundmax driver SoundMAXAudio_V61026590_Win7
but I still haven’t got sound back
please leave me a link if you have any other driver that might work
I would also like to add
strange thing is that everything worked fine and then suddenly stop
right now im sitting and thinking there is no way i can get sound back on my pc, not with windows 7 anyway.
Second question why didn’t i get sound on my old SB Audigy ?
And if now i should go out and buy a new sound card that will work 110% with windows 7 i have no idea what to look for. I have a simple stereo with 2 speakers so i don’t need anything fancy, i just need something that works.
The thing that scares me is the fact that windows does see a soundcard, its not like if I had an unknown device. It just doesn’t work, and soundcard is definitely not broken.

    thanx in advance
    Mik

OK , this is how i fixed my problem
i knew that the problem is not my sound card
and that i lost sound after installing update from Microsoft.
I lokked back one week, and i had sound once again. After that i wrote down what updates are to be installed.
    and here they are:
    KB971467
    KB975560
    KB978251
    KB979099
    KB890830
    KB979202

now normaly i let windows update with all patches and updates but i wanted to figure out which one of these are couasing theproblem, and....
    I couldnt fingure it out.
Somtimes i install all of them
reboot and i have sound, next time i reboot sound is gone
then i have tryed 2-3 at the time and basicly it happend after i installed
KB890830 and KB979202 as last updates. But then again as i said it, i had a situation where sound was working even after i installed all updates.

So my decision is not to install these updates.
yes its a bit risky but at least windows is working and my sound card is working.

Please notice im not recomending not to keep your windows up to date
i just say this is an alternative and poor solution, but its never the less some kind of solution.

And i have tryed all kind of drives for soundcard, and thet didnt help, because as I said, windows was reporing my soundcard to be functional and it had drivers, but i didnt have any sound anyway.

good luck to all of you with similar problem.

    PS. one more thing
i tryed to uninstall updates, but didnt help, only recovery (rollback) helps.
