    sound problem

    Hello,

I have a sound problem on my HP Pavillon desktop (windows 7).

Everytime, after some hours of use, I hear sound clicks&pops.
I restart, and the problem is back after some hours.

When sound clicks&pops occurs, I see abnormal CPU usage in task manager.

Like going back and forth from around 25% to around 65%.

HP support can't help (they say to do a system restore... they say that for every problem).

Can someone help? Another forum I should post?

    Thank you,

    Patrick

Have you done a system restore? Please go to your sevenforums profile and complete your system specs...

This sounds like the old days when certain devices were attempting to share addresses and irq's, shouldn't be happening today...

    Patrick,

Because of the current state of Windows 7 audio drivers this is someaht of a common problem. One thing that always causes this is if the system goes into "Sleep Mode". After coming out of sleep the audio will be corrupted. If this is the problem, best to disable sleep mode.

Check and see which process is using the CPU.

In task manager select the "Processes" tab.
Then select the "Show Processes From All Users" checkbox. You should be able to zero in on the process that's causing the problem.

When the problem occurs, run this program. Everything should be green. If you have a lot of red, you may have some driver problem.

    Hello,
    Thanks for all the replies.
Good idea for sleep mode! It might be that!
By disabling sleep mode, you mean that I should use hibernate when I'm leaving the pc? Or simply always shutdown?
I'll do latency checks back from work.

    I'm at work.
I think I'm using Hibernate instead of Sleep mode.
Can this problem occurs also with Hibernate mode?
So, if yes, I should always shut down instead of hibernate and sleep?

I'm not sure, I disable Hibernate first thing after installing....
I believe Hibernate is sleep but with the computer's memory saved as file on the hard drive.

I know that my onboard sound will have clicks, skips...etc if I let the computer go into sleep mode so I would think Hibernate would cause the same problems.
I'm fairly sure this is either an audio driver problem, or a problem located in the BIOS.

Instead I set my drives and monitor to powerdown in 20 minutes.

It's easy to test, disable Sleep/Hibernate for a day.

    Thanks, I'll try that.
I'm sure that is the problem.

When you say "disable Sleep/Hibernate", you mean to just not go to Sleep/Hibernate mode? If not, how can disable Sleep/Hibernate?

All the settings (except Hibernate) can be accessed from:

    Control Panel/Power Options

Then select "Change Plan Settings".... for the good stuff select "Change Advanced Power Settings".

Since you're on a desktop, under the advanced section set Min/Max processor settings to 100%.

To turn Hibernate off, open a Command Shell and type:

    powercfg /HIBERNATE off

Then hit Return or Enter. To turn it back on.. same command with on instead of off.

    p.s.

Does anyone know of a way to access hibernate from the Windows interface?

    Hello,

No more sound problem since I don't use hibernate or sleep.
But might this be fixed with a windows update someday?
Is there something I can try to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Patrick
